Recommended by Hangzhou YWCA, several psychologists from Fuller Theological Seminary Psychology Research USA were invited to present at Nanjing YWCA. They gave us three psychological lectures on Friday afternoon and evening March 15, and Saturday morning March 16. This is the second time that Nanjing YWCA and YMCA integrate social resource by using the advantage of international network to develop the training on social service. More than 280 audience –members and co-workers from Nanjing YMCA, parents from Little Leadership Training Camping of Primary and Middle School Students’ Learning Ability Research Center of Nanjing Educational Bureau, and teachers and students from university social department in Nanjing.
The topic of Dr Anne Dueck is “Living Longer”. There are common symptoms that are warning signs regarding changes in health. Dr Anne Dueck explored ways to look for and take care of these symptoms. She gave us some advice to keep healthy when we are aging, such as good habit in dietary, enough sleeping time, taking part in social life and good habits, and regular medical exams etc. She also talked about how we could stay healthy and how we would respond to someone who is struggling with health issues, such as Alzheimer's.
Friday afternoon March 15th Maria Wong, from Graduate School of Psychology of Fuller Theological Seminary presented at NanjingYoufuxijiePrimary School, giving a topic about Parenting inChina: How to Raise Well-Adjusted Children? Dr. Maria Wong reviewed the existing literature on parenting and discussed features of parenting that may be most applicable for Chinese families to raise well-adjusted children. Many interactions in the process of the lecture, parents and children were inspired.
Alvin Dueck, PhD. From Fuller Graduate School of Psychology lectured on Saturday morning March 16th at Nanjing YMCA, and his subject is "Cultural Approaches to Therapy". He pointed out that cultures and individuals are different, so no one approach to counseling works for everyone. If one used only one approach, could that do harm? How are cultures different? These questions were discussed during the lecture.
Serial psychological lectures made Nanjing YMCA and YWCA have a close touch with teachers and students in universities and other sectors in society. We enrich the value of our team by using the way of cultural transmission to build the harmonious of the society.
