From the 2nd of June to the 8th of June, the special educational teachers from the day care centers for the disabled of Nanjing were in Hong Kong for the assembly training. During the stay, the trainees have got a new understanding of the social work both in theroy and in practice. What’s more, the trainees strengthened the service awareness and broadened their vision by visiting several Hong Kong day care centers for the disabled people. Through communication with the Hong Kong professional social workers, the trainees were touched and inspired in heart.
June 2nd, Ms. Sheng Hehua and Mr. Wang Yanjun, the co-workers from Nanjing YMCA, led the group of 41 special educational teachers from the day care centers for the disabled people to Hong Kong to take the one-week assembly training course. Mr. Liu Jinrong, the President of the Association of the Disabled Day Care Centers, and Mrs. Wang Yun, the Section Chief of the Nanjing Disabled Persons’ Federation went to the Nanjing Lukou International Airport and saw the trainees off in person, and they also made speeches to encourage all the trainees, which demostrated the leaders’sincere care and attention to the trainees for this assembly training course in Hong Kong.
The trainees benefited a lot from the theoretical learning on the second day. They learned what the social service is, what the professional means and what the SQS is about. The way of giving the lecture of Dr. Wu Jianxin’s is quite unique. He made the theoretical lessons vivid and dramatic. After one day’s study, the lecture led everybody to meaningful afterthoughts.
The field visit in the following days, we learned about the professional service, the standard service and the spirit of devotion. The day care centers in Hong Kong had a very professional personnel allocation and made full use of their own resources to make up the the shortness of manpower. We were deeply touched when visiting the sheltered workshop. Those mentally retarded person seemed to be useless and were easily ignored by others. However, they can work happily and live enjoyably in the sheltered workshop. They can earn the basic living by theirselves, and reduce the family’s burdens. Most importantly, they have been realizing their social function as an individual member of the society. Behind this, there were the professional tutorship by the social workers and the support from the government. Therefore, we get to know there is a big gap between Nanjing and Hong Kong in this aspect, meanwhile, we also find the space for us to improve our service in Nanjing.
The training courses in Hong Kong was packed and arranged reasonably. During the break of the visit, the teachers from the Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong showed us to the Golden Bauhinia Square, where the Hong Kong Handover Ceremony took place . We took a group photo to mark the occasion and felt the pride of being Chinese.
On the morning of June 8th, the group managers consists of 21 people from the Nanjing Day Care Centers for the disabled people went to Wu Kwai Sha Youth Village to attend the closing ceremony of our assembly training course. The Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong issued every trainee a certificate for this training. In the closing ceremony, the representatives of the trainees shared their feelings and expressed their deep gratitude to the trainers. We all appreciated their professional and valuable service to us. Mr. Fung accompanied us to visit the Hong Kong day care centers right after the recovery from his illness. Dr. Wu, just retired for one single day, was invited to be our trainer for free. According to the schedule, Dr. Wu only gives a one-day lecture, however, he came to the Youth Village to visit us almost everyday and accompanied us all the time. The most touching was that considering two handicaped trainees , he took the two trainees by his own car. When visiting the Golden Bauhinia Square, he asked his another brother to get a better parking space for our bus, while he took the bus with us. All these little things conveyed his spirit of devotion. In addition, we still owe Mr. Wu Dingxin our gratitude. He lived together and ate together with us in the Youth Village. Besides this, he was also our interpretor to help us understand the Cantonese. Here, we want to thank those organizations that warmly welcomed and received us. Even though they presented us in non-standard Mandarint to explain and demonstrate the training facilities carefully, and answer the questions from the trainees.
This teachers group consists of 41 people, and two of them are disabled. While, we finished every step smoothly. Two of the trainees, Xin Fu and Zhou Wenxiang, we would like to say thank you for you caring for the diasbled companies. Through this assembly training course, we learned professional knowledge and applied theory into practice during the visit. The service awareness of “people first” got strengthened and our mind or vision for serving the disabled got broadened. Comparing with the Hong Kong organizations, there is still a great gap between us. But we believe, in the coming decade or two decades, Nanjing will play the leading role of day care service for the disabled people in China. We, the first trainees will be the pioneers in this field.
