On Jan. 22nd, 2014, the first batch of shoebox gifts collected by Nanjing YMCA and The Study and Training Centre of Students’ Ability of Primary and Middle School had been delivered to QiqiaoPrimary Schoolin Qinhuai District in the morning, and distributed to the hands of 406 pupils in this school. These gifts prepared elaborately brought pleasant surprise to those students mainly from the migrant workers’ children, and would make them happy in the winter vacation!
QiqiaoPrimary Schoolis located at south-east point of Qinhuai District, in the continuum of rural and urban, which means the transportation is desolated relatively, and the school building is simple and crude. However, the environment of the school is beautiful and with strong atmosphere of culture. 96% of the pupils come from the family of migrant workers, the condition of their family are relatively hard. Nanjing YMCA supports 6 pupils among the poorest families. Since 2013, Nanjing Y started to donate gifts to this school, even our gift is little, but it carries the pure love from students form the urban, which gives the migrant workers children measureless happy.
The shoebox gift movement started in theUnited Kingdom. This activity allows individuals to care for others by placing gifts such as stationeries , toys, footwear, gloves, candy etc. into shoeboxes and give them to those in need. Nanjing YMCA started this activity since 2011, to collect shoebox gifts to the orphans living in rural area; we have received support and help from British International School in Nanjing and some middle and primary school inNanjing. Today, we conduct this activity again, and will continue year by year.
