Nanjing YMCA and Nanjing Primary and Secondary Academic Research Center

During the 2012 winter and summer vacations, the Nanjing YMCA, the Nanjing Primary and Secondary Academic Research Center, and the Hong Kong YMCA of Kowloon, all collaborated to host the first ever “Nanjing Youth to Hong Kong Parent-Child Volunteer Training Camp”, which was held at the Hong Kong YMCA Wu Kai Sha training camp. The participating group from Nanjing included Zhao Dongshu and Xu Cuicui from the Nanjing YMCA, Fang Mingzhong and Fang Mingzhong from the Nanjing Primary and Secondary Academic Research Center, as well as 104 3rd grade students and their parents.

Using their skills and background knowledge of sociology and psychology, Hong Kong YMCA Executive Director Dr. Wu Jianxin and his team focused the Parent-Child around the theme of “thankful hearts”. The motto for the training camp was “Study diligently, honor your parents, listen to your teachers, and always do better.” The students training activities included: clapping games that helped their attention and cooperation skills; singing songs like “Big White Swan”, “Picking Durian”, The Moonlight Represents my Heart” and thankful hearts; and an game that helped the students get a taste of the hardships of parenting called “Helping Support a Blind Parent”. Parents were able to found out what it’s like to be blind, have their hearts pricked, see their children practice good table manners at the BBQ and buffet parties, tour Hong Kong Chinese University, and give encouraging lessons to their children. During the get-together, Fang Mingzhong of the Nanjing Primary and Secondary Academic Research Center passed out to the Nanjing students “Youth Olympics” promotional CDs, and wrote up a Youth Olympic motto “Share youthfulness, strengthen the future.” The Ninggang primary school students gave performances and interacted with other students, strengthening the ties between “the people of the dragon”.

Parents training included a lecture on the “ten commandments of raising children”, which helped the parents learn about misconceptions in raising children.  The parents and children also wrote to each other on what they expect from each other, strengthening their communication and understanding. Parents also wrote to their children expressing their love.

The highpoint of the activities came when parents and children participated in “nighttime campfire talk”, when they sang the song “Thankful Heart” and tearfully expressed their feelings. During the closing ceremonies, Dr. Wu Jianxin spoke about reinforcing the lessons learned from the training camp, which helped the children learn about having a great learning attitude, helped them to understand that in order to secure a happy home, they should study hard and work diligently. Through the six-day camp, amid songs, joy and tears; parents and children were also able to tour the famous sites around Hong Kong.

The parents and children wholeheartedly appreciated the this experience of heart-to-heart exchange, and they thank the Nanjing YMCA, the Nanjing Primary and Secondary Academic Research Center, and the Hong Kong YMCA for their careful planning and consideration.

During their time in Hong Kong, Executive Assistant Zhao Dongshu of the Nanjing YMCA  and Mr. Fang Mingzhong of the Nanjing Primary and Secondary Academic Research Center were able to visit the YMCA Asia Headquarters, the YMCA Hong Kong International Exchange and Expansion Department, the local Hong Kong YMCA, the local Hong Kong YWCA. While there, they distributed Nanjing “Youth Olympics” promotional discs, and encouraged them to organize volunteer groups to help out during the second “Youth Olympics”.

During the summer of 2013, the Nanjing YMCA will once again organize these activities. For those interested, please contact Teacher Xu: Phone number 84713551.
